Coronal Polishing Course Highlights

The Coronal Polishing Certification course at Illinois Health Careers is designed to meet the educational requirements outlined in the Illinois Health Act.

The coronal polishing course consists of:

  • Four (4) hours of didactic study covering anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and dental emergencies, followed by a written exam.
  • Two (2) hours of step-by-step coronal polishing training followed by hands-on practice.

Requirements for Coronal Polishing Course

  • Candidates must be 18 years old
  • Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
  • A graduate of a Dental Assisting Program.
  • Have one thousand (1000) or more hours of dental assisting experience.
  • Be a certified dental assistant as designated by DANB.
  • Completion of the application and payment for the course is required.
  • Participants must adhere to OSHA guidelines for infection control, wear scrubs, and bring their own safety glasses for the clinical portion. They must also use clinical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, mask, eye-wear, and clinic gown.
  • Each participant is required to act as a patient for coronal polishing.
  • After completing the sealant placement course, participants must perform clinical competency on a minimum of six (6) patients under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist or dental hygienist.
